This is getting serious now…………. Just kidding!

It’s been just over an year for me as an immigrant student in Canada, navigating the intricate world of UX design, the road has been a rollercoaster of challenges, successes, and burnout. Balancing academics, part-time work, freelancing, and planning for a full-time job in the summer of 2024 has been no small feat. Yet, through it all, I’ve found ways to cope, learned valuable lessons, and emerged with a sense of confidence in the face of the future.

The Academic Balancing Act:

Being an immigrant student is like walking a tightrope, constantly adjusting to a new culture while grappling with the demands of rigorous UX design courses.

The pressure to excel academically is intense, but I’ve learned that self-care and effective time management are non-negotiables when trying to maintain a semblance of balance.

Part-Time Work and Freelancing:

To make ends meet, I work part-time and freelancing opportunities. However, this dual commitment often led to burnout as the lines between work, academics, and personal time blurred.

Setting boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and learning to say no have become essential skills in this delicate balancing act.

Future Planning and Full-Time Job Pursuit:

As the summer of 2024 looms, the pursuit of a full-time job in UX design takes center stage. The pressure to stand out in a competitive job market is palpable. Crafting a compelling portfolio, networking with industry professionals, and staying aware of the latest trends have become my focal points as I prepare to transition from student to full-time professional.

Coping Strategies:

In the face of burnout, I’ve discovered the importance of seeking support. Whether from fellow students, mentors, or mental health resources, having a network to lean on has been invaluable. Establishing a routine that includes breaks, physical activity, and relaxation techniques has also played a crucial role in maintaining my mental and emotional well-being.

Building Confidence in the Future:

Despite the challenges, this journey has instilled a profound sense of confidence in my ability to navigate complexity and emerge stronger. Recognizing and celebrating personal achievements, big and small, fuels my optimism and reinforces the belief that the skills gained during this tumultuous period will serve as a sturdy foundation for a successful career in UX design.
